Captures OK from Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge, but I prefer Scenalyzer's filenaming function; Best for editing; version 6.5 includes MainConcept MPEG-2 encoder. Very stable, tons of info on web.

Software_2_Comments

Excellent DV/AVI captures from Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge; If splitting at commercials, sequential numbers automatically added to base filename.

Just got into this area since 12/30/2002 purchase of Sony DRU500A DVD burner. Very nice to see comparisons on your site of the many software packages available for a multitude of purposes. Good job! Too bad there isn't one perfect package that can do it all.

Does everything I need at the moment: simple menus, flexible chapter points, does not re-encode DVD-compliant MPG2 files, allows custom backgrounds and audio clips over menus. Easy to use, stable.

Couldn't import AVI files after editing in Premier. Wrong settings?

I downloaded and tried several DVD authoring program demos in early January. Some were too simplistic and limited (e.g. Sonic MyDVD that came with Sony DVD burner) I read excellent reviews of DVD Complete, but to my disappointment the downloadable demo was limited to 5-minute clips, which made it impossible to test with my current project -- to put 2 45-min TV episodes on a DVD. So I guess I'm sticking with Ulead DVD Movie Factory for now.

My "Good" rating is relative here. Capture worked for me with my 17 minute 8mm tape. Automatic scene detection was cool and editing very easy. Menus, transitions, were easy to do. However, something is wrong with the burn to DVD process. None of my PC-based DVD players recognize the DVD. Also, the program crashes at least once an hour. If the bugs were fixed, I would be quite happy with this program and would give it an excellent.

The capture from 8 mm tape worked, but I found editing very awkward -- make that unusable. Never got far enough to test the burn feature. However, the program never crashed on me!

I'm an experienced "DVD creator", transferring many VHS tapes, TV broadcasts and DV camcorder holiday tapes to DVD. Have tried many tools. Current favo's : Pinnacle Studio 8 to capture and edit, TMPGenc or CCE to encode and Dazzle DVD Complete to author. TIP: to create a 16:9 DVD, just create the video_ts directory, and use IFOedit to edit the ifo's and set it to 16:9. Works like a charm!

Works great for me! I love it. I have not seen any degradation in encode quality like you mention, although I have not used TPMGenc. The reason I think it encodes perfectly is that I can see no difference between my source video (usually Digital 8) and the encoded result. Everything else works fine. There is one major thing I do not like though, if you forget something before you edit your menus and then want to add it, everything has to be regenerated and you lose your editing work. Overall, great product.

This product works very well for me, start to finish. I have suffered very few minor glitches and usually my audio is IN synch but whenever I do have a problem, that's usually it. I highly recommend this.

Software_2_Comments

For the money, it's simple but extremely inflexible and the quality is poor. I got rid of mine.

Can't edit as extensively as Magix Video Deluxe but the encoding is better than Expression. I recommend it for someone who wants simple software.

This product produces the best quality video of any encoder I've used. The bonus is that it is a mere $48! Program is stable, haven't needed to use tech support, so I can't comment on that. Watch out if you are overclocking your CPU...TMPGenc can crash because it is extremely CPU intensive.

Pinnacle tech support is totally incompetent. The only help you can get is off the user board.

Site_And_Overall_DVD_Authoring_Comments

I bought a DVD burner and started looking for capture hardware and software. I purchased the Studio Deluxe AV/DV package and the capture card crashed both of my HD's. I am not running a raid set up either. I contacted Pinnacle support twice and the only reply I received was a listing to links on how to convert MP3s etc. nothing relating to my problem. I then posted on the Pinnacle board and received a couple of board replies and several to my e-mail address. I spent several days reloading windows and reinstalling the card and my drive still continued to crash. I then spent some time on their board and found a few other instances of HD crashes. I eventually hooked the drive to an IDE controller and everything worked except the drive was then too slow for video capture. Seems the AV/DV card is incompatible with Asus boards and the onboard Promise ATA controller. There were a couple of people with Dells and HP that were getting crashed, but the Asus/Promise combo was a definite problem. I posted my findings on the board and criticized Pinnacle for not telling me and other people of the problem and they removed the post along with a few others having the same problem with Asus/Promise combination.

This program works ok if the project is kept small and simple. Turning off all auto features helps, but it still has lots of bugs. I like the interface, but it has a long way to go before it will work as advertised. Best for part time hobbiest, not some one looking for high quality work.

This site is great so long as it will help keep people from buying crapy software. I have spent hundreds of hours with this program only to decide not to continue with it. I am looking for a profesional finished product without having to beta test for the software company. I have used at least four versions of Pinnacle software and found them to be less than advertised and thier support is lacking as well.

I am still having so many problems I don't want to rate anything quite yet BUT I will say this----DELL is HORRIBLE on their support. But when I have been able to get one burned I am capturing it in Videowave Movie Creator and making an mpeg file there. I have had to work out some bugs with that but things have been going pretty good so far with that. Then I like to use Sonic MyDVD to get that "movie" I made because I like the options it gives me to use. But there seems to be a possible problem between Sonic MyDVD and DirectCD on the Dell systems. I am still working on that one. But after I removed the DirectCD, things DID start moving smoother until I had to uninstall MyDVD. When I tried to reinstall it, the program disk from Dell was corrupt and I am waiting on another one. Nobody would believe the hours I have spend in the last two weeks on one problem after another. My husband is about ready to divorce me. I've only gotten 3-4 hours per night sleep and have been at this computer the rest of the time. But I'm determined because I really do want to be able to take my home movies and burn them on DVD's. But these tech people sure aren't much help are they?

Tech support took a month to reply. USB had no video, but would capture audio. Took it back and bought ATI AIW 9700 with Studio 8.

Good idea for site. Am astounded at the amount of problems I have read about for all products though. Finally got Studio 8 to capture correctly by using a second drive with nothing on it but captured files.

Real time MPEG-2 encoding from DV is surprisingly good, even on my Celeron 1300. I still use TMPGEnc most of the time, for best quality. Import bug: Timecode for 23.976 fps video with 3:2 pulldown is off - counts time as if frames are at 29.97. Playback is ok but not if imported as separate video/audio - must be program stream or loses pulldown entirely. Video at native 29.97 fps has no problems. Scrubbing thru video to pick thumbnail frame can be very slow for large video clips. Tech support so far as been *nonexistent*. I am a registered user and have received zero responses to two bug reports. Even though the product works fairly decently, their tech support offering zero help will prompt me to look elsewhere for my next video software purchase. (ARE YOU LISTENING, ULEAD?) MPEG capture setting profiles are fixed, can be altered only with editing config file to unlock them. Wish it had animated menu abilities. Nice selection of backgrounds and themes included. I'm optimistic at least the pulldown bug will be fixed via patches.

Site_And_Overall_DVD_Authoring_Comments

It's strange and disappointing how most if not all consumer DVD authoring software for Windows has stability problems. Nonetheless, I'm having a ball burning home-made DVDs. I prefer Unix/Linux and use Windows 2000 for video editing only because the tools I want are not yet available on Linux. Once they're up to snuff on Linux (maybe 1 year from now) I'll be retiring the "Windows box" anyway.

This is an authoring program; it doesn't capture, edit, or encode. Not terribly stable, either, but I give it high marks for being capable. It handles AC-3, it does multiple audio and video tracks, and doesn't get in the way of accessing the capabilities of the DVD format.

I have only used this for authoring DVDs. It's not bad for beginners, being more capable than any other $100 program, but it's totally template based. You have to hack template scripts if you want to make major changes to layouts. They really need a layout/template editor. Like more beginner programs, you can't use AC-3 audio, and 16:9 formats have to be hacked with IFOedit.

With 23 years of experience in the SW engineering field, I can say with some authority that the Studio 8 product isn't even beta quality. I've installed on three different platforms and tried to process multiple types of video through to DVD, and have yet to get through the entire process once w/o studio crashing and/or hanging. Rendering (even just to a file) always chokes randomly. Bottom line, save yourself the stress, and get a reliable product till Pinnacle takes getting this junk fixed seriously.

Hangs and crashes may have finally been solved with a patch. Managing large projects with lots of files is nearly impossible. Scrubbing in edit mode is too slow. Burning does not allow inclusion of data files. Can not use Next/Prev remote buttons to navigate through multiple titles. Does not save and reuse rendered motion menus. I always use TMPGEnc for encoding because rendered files do not automatically replace original file and are poorer quality.

Hi, I'm into DVD for 18 months now and have used (or at least tried to use) Studio 8 since Summer 2002. My experiences with the software are extremely bad. The program crashes so frequently that it's almost unusable. Even the latest bug-fix (8.5.18d) is only cabable of doing projects less then 30 mins in length. And you will need a minimum of 1 GB RAM even for movies of that size! DVD authoring and DVD menues are totally unusable.

Tech support, or any kind of support is useless. The software is full of bugs. I upgraded my pc to a faster machine with XP and had to pay out for a software upgrade and now it works worse than before! Audio is either non-existent or out of sync or only 1 second of video gets captured or the whole app crashes!! Useless!

Very easy to use, and much more flexible than Ulead PictureShow when you have lots of pictures. Transitions are cooler as well.

Over all very satisfied with the performance with Studio 8. I capture analog only now, and output to VHS and DVD-r. Have had very little problems, just learned to save the project file frequently.

Just found the site. DVD authoring is fun for me, I have MyDVD hich came with my Pioneer burner but it is way simple and you can't do much. Studio 8's authoring is very nice and full featured for a $99USD product. There are somethings I would like to see added, but for now it is great.

Great editing features, but program crashes a lot while editing, so save often. Caturing analog gets audio OOS problems. Encoding is excruciatingly slow. Forget about DVD menus and burning. Tech support is only through their forum and is very sparse.

Site_And_Overall_DVD_Authoring_Comments

Good forum. Studio 8 is the most unstable software I've ever seen, but it has a cool editing interface for video and audio, with lots of pro-looking transitions. I use Scenalyzer for analog capture, Studio to split into AVI's and add music and fades, TMPGenc to render the AVI's to MPG's, MyDVD to burn, RecordNow to copy, and MediaFace to make labels and case inserts. Takes forever but the end result is very satisfying.

Was not able to capture from DV cam without crashes. Burn crashes sometimes if I forget to reboot before starting. I use this only for creating DVD's from finished AVI's or MPG's, where each one is a selection on the menu and it works very for that. Wish it had the ability to select chapter points from a finished video.

I was, at a previous time, able to capture with this program and it did a reasonably good job (captures to MPEG-2, which is useful to me). At some point (without my making any changes to the program) I began to get "Failed to build preview graph" errors when attempting to capture. I reinstalled the product, corrected some potential permissions problems on my work drive and tuned up my IEEE a little (read that the error could be caused by a device conflict). Nothing resolved the issue, and I am not having trouble with any of my other capturing problems.

Very nice site, lots of useful info here. The design is easy on the eyes, too. I have been working with digital video for years and PCs in general for...a really long time. I have only authored a few DVDs, but I'd consider myself to be at an intermediate level of knowledge (and soon to be expert with sites like this!).
