Principal’s Report

Ms. Pegg shared that there is a possibility that the Pre-K office will want to add a three year old class at Seawell, as opposed to changing the current two four year old classes into mixed age classes. The SGC supported the decision to offer a trailer for the three-year --old program while leaving the existing classes as four-year-old classes in an effort to support Seawell’s Pre-K teachers.

Pat White, one of Seawell’s enrichment teachers, is out with an injury from a fall on ice in the parking lot. Amy Norwood will be filling in for her.

Student projections for 2004-2—5 are down 16 students.

There is a gifted proposal that includes the use of Test Magic on higher-grade levels as assessment to check progress. Growth for all is important. Will this be complicated? TIOT has been used in the past to identify students. District discussion dates were referenced for any interested parties.

There is a draft nutrition plan. Mark agreed to type up the SGC’s concerns, input. Comments will be sent to Stephanie Willis at Lincoln Center.

Old Business

Mark will email PTA about the reelection of 1 SGC member.

Change in polling location- we faxed a letter to them. The location will most likely be moved.

Lights in front of the school- go through Duke Power. A map of the campus will be used. Phylis will go through and record where lights will be needed.

New Business

Traffic letter from Smith Middle School to Seawell discussed problems in the morning from 7:30-8:15 recommending that our SGC write a letter of concern. Our SGC supports the letter from Smith. Mark will email the principal.

Susan and Marny will request to have lines painted in Seawell’s parking lot to mark three lanes and to show traffic patterns.

Larry suggested that Seawell hire police officers to help with traffic/safety on the day of Folkmoot.

K-3 assistants- Mark was planning to attend the BOCC meeting. Larry planned to attend a separate meeting to support the need for second grade assistants in each classroom. SGC planned to email parents to gain more support. Mark typed a statement to be shared at the school board meeting by Larry. The statement is as follows;

The Seawell SGC endorses full time assistants for k-3 and asks that the school board request that these positions be funded in future budgets. Assistants are crucial to meet the academic needs of all students and to preserve the sanity of our teachers.
