Principal's Report
Keri Litwak has resigned. She received a scholarship to attend the Masters is
School Administration program at UNC.
We are beginning to interview for the following positions: fourth, k/1, third,
second.
The SGC Chair and new member orientation scheduled for May may be cancelled.
The potential Pre-K class will be located in what is now the exercise trailer.
The Public Schools Foundation has scheduled a fundraiser breakfast at Squids on
May 14th.
Mrs. Pegg shared information regarding No Child Left Behind and AYP goals. She
shared what would happen if schools that did not pass last year did
not pass again. The School Board will choose the schools that families from
schools that did not meet goals two consecutive years may choose to go to
instead of their home schools. The district has chosen to use Title One funds to
provide any transportation that would be necessary. This will affect
all Title One Schools by reducing the entire budget by 20%. This could also
effect reading teacher positions.
On May 13th SGC chairs are invited to meet with Glen Singleton and community
leaders to discuss equity.
On May 15th, Dr. Collins Hart has prepared a celebration program at Lincoln
Center to honor Brown vs. Board of Education.
Pat White is still out. Terry Stern is subbing for her.
Seawell is getting a new roof this summer. The roof was damaged in the windstorm
and is covered by insurance.
Please encourage parents to get involved in the PTA. We are in need of filling
many PTA positions.
New Business/Old Business
Susan will request for three lanes to be painted at the bottom of the parking
lot to help with traffic.
Katherine Worley is the interim co-chair of the SGC.
Review of year-
Merger- still not decided. New County Commissioners are going to be elected so
stay involved and informed on people?s positions.
School Population- no new transfers are to be allowed for next year, population
could be effected by NCLB if other schools fail to meet AYP two years
in a row. New construction and household turnover could also affect growth.
We are pretty sure that the voting poll place has been changed from Seawell.
Amy Kwiek will assess the campus to see when outdoor lights would be beneficial.
Keri drafted a letter of other facility concerns to be sent to Steve Scroggs.
Terri Stern agreed to maintain the list and to keep Steve Scroggs
updated on our concerns.
The School Improvement Plan report will be completed by the end of the year and
shared with the SGC in the fall.
The committee thought that a traffic officer would be beneficial for Meet the
Teacher night, Orientation and Folkmoot, for safety reasons.
Be aware of the Legislature discussion to change the school calendar. Stay
informed and get your opinion to legislators if concerned.
Mark was interested in having a place on the beginning of the school year form
where parents could indicate if they were interested in being on a
school listserve. He will contact Kim Hoke about that.
A few parent reps were concerned about the amount of for profit flyers being
sent through the schools. Kim Hoke is the person to contact at Lincoln
Center if there are concerns.
The first SGC meeting scheduled for the 2004-2005 school year is Sept. 7th. We
will schedule an earlier meeting if it becomes necessary.
