Seawell Elementary School

Minutes were approved.

It was decided that Shelia in the office would retype the bylaws in order for the SGC to have a working document that could be adapted.

General Announcements

The SIP review is scheduled for Monday October 18th at Rashkis. Mrs. Pegg explained the process.
Ms. Pegg also shared portions of the School Improvement Plan. Short discussions were held on homework, our Research Triangle Schools Partnership, and
the School Improvement planning team.

Principal?s Report

Mrs. Pegg shared district budget cuts due to lower enrollment than anticipated. The cuts that effect Seawell include lower amounts of staff
development money and a 5% reduction in instructional supply money. The money will be released on the 40th day rather than the 20th day.

The symphony field trip was cancelled for fourth and fifth grades but will continue in third grade.

The third grade pre EOG was given the third week of school and our scores are back.

Susan has made the request for additional lighting on campus.

Jennifer Jansen is our parent rep for the Curriculum Council and Melissa Segal-Miller is the parent rep for the enrichment Committee.

Pat White?s job description for the half day was redesigned. Cathy Kroninger, a former CHCCS teacher, has been hired to fill the other half of the
day. She is responsible for teaching fourth and fifth grade math classes.

Susan will write a letter to encourage participation in the Walk for Education.

Madeline Grummet is working on an Educational Excellence Study to assess the equity between Orange County Schools and CHCCS. Data is being gathered
from the schools including a comparison of programs, clubs, and compensation for staff. The study will come out in November.

Two new county commissioners will be elected in November. Four people are running.

The district is looking into ways to save money. Electricity usage was one area that could be improved.

 Old Business
Terry wrote the letter to the school board addressing issues of drainage and bathrooms without heat and hot water. Mark suggested that we go to the
school board and request a study of drainage and safety.

New Business
The group brainstormed ideas for the new SIP. Some concerns of the SGC include noise level in the cafeteria, facilities, how to make the cafeteria
more comfortable with less chaos.

A discussion about the nutrition policy and recommendations for amounts of recess took place. What if any recess time could be taken away from
students? Susan told the committee that Seawell provided more PE to students than other schools. Opinions about the necessary amount of recess and
classroom discipline practices varied.
