My 5000 watt generator powers: lower level gas furnace, fridge, chest freezer, garage door
opener, lights, tv, dish receiver, computers all at the same time.
Things to Think About...
 | Run your generator 10 feet from your house (or whatever the recommended
distance is for your unit) |
 | Make sure you have a battery powered carbon monoxide detector |
 | Make sure you properly ground your generator as instructed in the owner's
manual |
 | Lock your generator via a locking cable so that it cannot be easily stolen.
A thief in New Bern, NC after Hurricane Isabel started the victim's
lawnmower to mask the generator being shut off and stole the
generator. The victim thought the generator was still running but since
the lights were off, they thought maybe an electrical part broke. |
 | Buy a wheel kit if your generator does not have wheels to avoid back
surgery. :-) |
 | The only thing worse than not having a generator is having one that won't
run when you need it!
 | Keep oil and spark plugs on hand |
 | Change oil every season (or at least before major weather events) |
 | Use gas stabilizer so you can store gas for 2 years |
 | Start and run with a load every month |
|
 | Store gas in a safe place away from combustibles and pilot lights |
 | Gas stations require electricity to pump gas, so you need to buy gas
beforehand |
 | Buy a car siphon so you can use gas from you cars |
 | Fill your cars with gas before a major weather event |
 | Install a transfer switch so you can run your gas furnace and other hardwired
appliances and so you don't kill any linemen by backfeeding power to the
grid |
 | Dispose of oil properly |
